By exploring thought-provoking b ooks and films\, we aim to foster engaging discussions and critical though t about the impact of technology on our lives. Each session will focus on a specific work\, using it as a springboard to discuss contemporary issues and concerns. \n\nSession 2: Frankenstein - The Modern Prometheus \n\nOve rview: Mary Shelley's groundbreaking novel Frankenstein (1818\, 1831) serv es as a timeless parable for the ethical dilemmas surrounding unchecked sc ientific ambition and technological advancement. Join us as we explore the novel's themes of creation\, responsibility\, and the consequences of “pl aying God.” We'll discuss the novel's relevance to contemporary issues suc h as AI\, cloning\, and the ethics of emerging technologies.  \n\nFollowin g our first session on Frankenstein\, we’ll take our cue from Shelley’s ph ilosophically-informed description of how the Monster learns to read and s peak (volume II\, chapters III to VII). Arguably\, the Monster learns in w ays that parallel how AI learns. In this respect\, the novel looks forward to contemporary debates about what constitutes “intelligence”—human\, art ificial\, or otherwise—and concerns about the possibility of machines beco ming more intelligent than their creators (the so-called “technological si ngularlty”).\n\nDiscussion Points\n\n\n What counts as “intelligence”?\n How does the Monster learn\, and how does this model of learning compare to h ow AI learns?\n How does the Monster’s intelligence compare with Victor’s? \n What is the technological singularity?\n What are the ethical implication s of the emerging field of “organoid intelligence” and the production of b rain organoids?\n\n\nRecommended Reading:\n\n\n Frankenstein\, 1818 edition \, by Mary Shelley\n Online version from Project Gutenberg\, or get a paper copy from your favorite store\n Organoid intelligence (OI): the new fronti er in biocomputing and intelligence-in-a-dish\n Organoid intelligence: trai ning lab-grown mini-brains to learn and compute with AI\n Brain organoids\, consciousness\, ethics and moral status\n Mapping the Ethical Issues of Br ain Organoid Research and Application\n Cerebral Organoids and Biological H ybrids as New Entities in the Moral Landscape\n\n\nThis session is open to all\, and no prior knowledge of the novel is required!\n\n\nOur Dialectic ians:\n\nDr. Sue Laver  \n\nInaugural director of the ϲ Writing Centr e and former SCS Associate Dean\, Academic and Faculty Affairs\, Sue is a  Frankenstein devotee.
