With its more insidious applications in mind\, a number o f recent academic discussions – from visual culture studies and the global art history to the history of science and media archaeology – have come t o treat the paradigm with caution\, even scepticism. Yet at the same time\ , for better or for worse\, it remains implicit within the bulk of humanis tic academic production. This one-day interdisciplinary conference thus co nfronts innovation at a crossroads. It interrogates its place within theor y and praxis by asking: how are we best to approach and define innovation i n contemporary academic discourses? Is the paradigm purely a means of disa rming social pressure for an all-inclusive equalized prosperity\; or might it be recuperated to provide a stimulus for sustainable growth? Can we un derstand innovation in a broader global spectrum without falling into the trap of cultural essentialism\; or does this concept perpetuate Western-ce ntric views and mores? Can the concept of innovation be used for the analy sis of historical periods\; or does it figure too easily in teleological na rratives?9:00am - Coffee and refreshments9:30am - Presentations begin5:00p m - Keynote speech6:30pm - ReceptionKeynote speaker: Dr. Keith Moxey\, Bar bara Novak Professor of Art History and Department Chair at Barnard Colleg e (Columbia University): 'Imagining Time: The Temporality of Art's History ' DTSTART:20140418T130000Z DTEND:20140419T003000Z LOCATION:CA\, MAI (Montréal\, arts interculturel\, CA\, 3680 rue Jeanne Man ce SUMMARY:Innovation & Its Contestants - AHCS Emerging Scholars Conference URL:/channels/event/innovation-its-contestants-ahcs-em ergins-scholars-conference-235143 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
