DESCRIPTION:Summary\nThe ISS Program is proud to present a workshop on inte
 llectual property from the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO)and
  the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.  CIPO is responsible regis
 tering patents\, trade-marks\, copyrights\, industrial designs and integra
 ted circuit topographies in Canada.  Their accomplished IP leaders will in
 troduce the Canadian IP system and raise awareness of IP by introducing ba
 sic concepts such as\n     the importance and strategic use of IP\;\n	    a
 n introduction to trade secrets\, patents\, trade-marks\, copyrights and i
 ndustrial designs\;\n	     useful resources and tips\;\n	     links to IP pu
 blications and on-line tools\; and\n	    contact information.\n \nCourse Co
 ntent\nMr .  Christian Cawthorn will be delivering the presentation called
  'IP: What's in it for you?' followed by the delivery of the Samatha Chang
  Case Study outlined below.\nParticipants will also have the chance to exp
 lore and apply issues in IP by participating in a case study with an exper
 ienced discussion leader.   The case study (see below) will cover:\n    Va
 lue of trade-marks and patents and of trade secrets\n	    Types of IP\n	    
 Defining and protecting a new discovery\n	    Disclosure\n	    Criteria for 
 patentability\n	    Value of information found in IP databases\n	    IP owne
 rship\nStudents are expected to read the case and information provided to

 ention?\nJust after she turned 18 and before starting classes at Provincia
 l Technical University (PTU)\, Samantha Chang got a summer job in the PTU 
 engineering research lab. She works in the laboratory of Professor John Mi
 lbourne. Samantha's status is unclear as the professor pays a small monthl
 y stipend out of a miscellaneous research account for work delivered.\nTha
 t summer Professor Milbourne's lab was puzzling out a quality control prob
 lem faced by a client\, AutoPartsCo. As part of this project\, Samantha de
 velops and implements an idea worth thousands of dollars to the client com
 pany. The client wants to file a patent on the idea.\n\n	Sample questions\n
