Con fidence in these models quickly evaporates when considering complex inorga nic solids and molecular crystals\, however\, despite the importance of th ese materials to technology\, biology\, and human health. In particular\, many crystalline materials are associated with diseases\, from malaria to kidney stones. This presentation will illustrate the beauty and complexity of crystal growth\, through mechanisms often hidden and deceptive\, in pa thological molecular crystals\, including kidney stones as well as “xenost ones” that form as a consequence of active pharmaceutical ingredients that form crystals in renal spaces. Armed with an understanding of some crysta l physics and crystal surface structure at the molecular level\, crystal g rowth inhibitors can be designed that bind to specific crystal sites and p revent the formation of pathological crystals\, suggesting a pathway to th erapies for crystal-based diseases in general. These observations also rev eal the complexity of dissymmetric surfaces of organic crystals\, which st ems from their inherent low molecular and crystal symmetry.\n DTSTART:20160920T170000Z DTEND:20160920T183000Z LOCATION:Room 10\, Maass Chemistry Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B8\ , 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Chemical Society Seminar: Dr. Michael Ward - Stopping Crystal Growt h in its Tracks: Pathways to Therapies for Pathological Crystallization URL:/channels/event/chemical-society-seminar-dr-michae l-ward-stopping-crystal-growth-its-tracks-pathways-therapies-patho-261829 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
