Acco rdingly\, water recycling is becoming increasingly common\, but this often results in serious contamination with recalcitrant organic pollutants (e. g. agri-chemicals\, active pharmaceutical ingredients\, endocrine disrupto rs\, etc.). Problems with current water purification methods include the f ormation of potentially toxic organochlorines\, generation of large volume s of waste\, high energy consumption and expense. There is a need to find a highly effective\, inexpensive and simple method of water purification t hat would be appropriate for widespread adoption. We have attempted to add ress this problem by creating a smart catalytic film that oxidatively dest roys organic pollutants as the contaminated water simply runs over its sur face. The specially designed film anchors an oxidation catalyst\, concentr ates the dilute aqueous organic pollutants bringing them in close contact with the catalyst\, and keeps the hydrogen peroxide oxidant solution separ ate from the water to be purified while allowing the hydrogen peroxide to slowly perfuse through the film in a controlled way to activate the cataly st sites.  In this way the catalytic film oxidatively destroys organic pol lutants without the water needing to be dosed (or contaminated) with oxida nt\, catalyst or other reagent. The film has been shown to oxidatively des troy both surrogate pollutants as well as “real world” pollutants such as triclosan\, EE2\, and bisphenol A. Details of the design\, construction an d performance of the smart catalytic film\, as well as its operation in se veral different configurations\, will be presented.\n DTSTART:20160913T170000Z DTEND:20160913T183000Z LOCATION:Rm 10\, Maass Chemistry Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B8\, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Chemical Society Seminar: Dr. L.
