 ated to the hydrologic\ncycle\n\n\n The research activity of the Microwave
  Unit at IAP\nhas been focussed on microwave radiometry for 40 years.\nInv
 estigations in remote sensing started by exploratory signature\nstudies in
  the frequency range from 1 to 100 GHz mainly of surface\nemissivities and
  of dielectric properties of natural media with\nfocus on snow\, ice\, wat
 er\, soil\, vegetation and atmospheric water.\nThe work led to the develop
 ment of forward models\, an example being\nthe Microwave Emission Model of
  Layered Snowpacks (MEMLS)\, to\nsurface-based investigations of the atmos
 phere\, and to the\ndevelopment and validation of retrieval methods of sat
 ellite-based\nradiometer data. After a general introduction the presentati
 on will\nbe focussed on (1) long-term observations of tropospheric water\n
 vapour and liquid water of clouds and precipitation\, and (2) on\nsurface-
 based radiometry at 1.4 GHz in support of ESA's\nSoil-Moisture and Ocean-S
