As cultural heritage collections \nbecome available online\, new interfaces are developed. Instead of\nthe intimidations of the reading room or finding aid\, our first\nconnection m ight be made through a search box\, gallery or RSS feed.\nBut while online interfaces might be more welcoming\, they still\nembed arguments.\n\nUsin g the tools and technologies of the digital humanities we can\ninvestigate the politics of cultural heritage interfaces by\ndismantling them and bui lding our own. This talk will look at a few\nexamples of how such interfac es can be hacked and reconstructed. In\nparticular I'll examine the possib ilities of text mining within the\nNational Library of Australia's Trove n ewspaper database\, and\nexplain how the 'Invisible Australians' project a ims to change the\nway we see the records of the White Australia Policy.\n \nDo these sorts of projects change the types of questions we can\nask? Do they change the distribution of power?\nSheratt has defined himself as an 'impatient historian'. \nBased in Canberra his work wrestles with the dev elopment of online\nresources for archives\, museums\, and history.  He's helped\ndevelop resources such as Bright Sparcs\, Mapping our Anzacs\, and \nthe History Wall.\n DTSTART:20120110T180000Z DTEND:20120110T190000Z LOCATION:Arts Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0G5\, 853 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Tim Sherratt (Canberra) Collections\, interfaces\, power and people URL:/channels/event/tim-sherratt-canberra-collections- interfaces-power-and-people-211954 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
