The genetic information is propagated through replication. However\, ho w this process began before the advent of\, or without\, a replicase enzym e is unknown. This mystery in the origins of life has prompted more than 5 0 years of research on nonenzymatic replication of a genetic material. RNA is a logical candidate for the primordial genetic polymer\, but significa nt problems associated with nonenzymatic RNA replication stifle the progre ss of building an abiotic system capable of Darwinian evolution (e.g. the extent of copying chemistry). I will describe how using modified (RNA-like ) genetic polymers can circumvent certain challenges associated with RNA c opying chemistry\, and discuss potential routes to sustain nonenzymatic ge netic polymer replication. In addition\, I will discuss pathways to furthe r elucidate transitions from chemical processes to those that are enzymati c/functional.\n\nBio:\n DTSTART:20210921T170000Z DTEND:20210921T183000Z LOCATION:Zoom link: SUMMARY:Chemical Society Seminar: Derek O'Flaherty - Origins of life\; how using artificial genetic polymers can overcome challenges associated with nonenzymatic replication URL:/chemistry/channels/event/chemical-society-seminar -derek-oflaherty-origins-life-how-using-artificial-genetic-polymers-can-33 2903 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
