This combination of orthogon al supramolecular interactions is responsible for the structure and functi on of biological systems. To mimic these\, the relationship between indivi dual recognition motifs and the resulting macromolecular assemblies can be simplified by using a limited set of assembly rules and DNA nanotechnolog y has used this concept to create a wide variety of self-assembled structu res with high fidelity. However\, DNA nanotechnology that relies solely on Watson–Crick base-pairing is limited by this very simplicity\, and ongoin g efforts in this area have been focused on creating increased complexity without introducing self-assembly defects.\n The first part of the talk wil l focus on the introduction of orthogonal supramolecular interactions to D NA nanostructures\, specifically hydrophobic interactions from novel DNA-c onjugates. Overall it is found that the introduction of DNA-conjugates to DNA nanostructures can introduce unprecedented modes of assembly\, provide new functionality and act as an interface with other nanomaterials.\n The second part of the talk concerns the engineering of protein nanomaterials\ , we see that the extension from a 4- to a 20-letter code brings both new challenges and opportunities for bionanotechnology. Specifically the devel oping self-assembled protein containers as therapeutic carriers and new to ols for biotechnology will be discussed.\n DTSTART:20160216T180000Z DTEND:20160216T193000Z LOCATION:Rm 10\, Maass Chemistry Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B8\, 801 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Winkler Lecture: Repurposing Nature’s Building Blocks for Nanotechn ology\, Dr. Thomas Edwardson URL:/chemistry/channels/event/winkler-lecture-repurpos ing-natures-building-blocks-nanotechnology-dr-thomas-edwardson-257565 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
