The 2025 edition will feature a keynote event in partnership聽wi th the Faculty of Engineering and the Peter Guo-hua Fu School of Architect ure.\n\nBlack History Month 2025 Opening Ceremony\n\nThursday\, February 6 \, 2024\n 5 PM - 8 PM\n Elizabeth Wirth Music Building | Tanna Schulich Hall | 527 Sherbrooke Street West\n\nThe 2025 Opening Ceremony will feature a keynote lecture by Shane Laptiste\, Principal and co-founder of the award- winning Studio of Contemporary Architecture (SOCA).\n\nReframing Spatial N arratives: Localising Blackness and the Built Environment\n \n Architecture is more than the design of buildings\; it is a manifestation of power\, hi story\, and identity. Its origins and evolution have often reinforced colo nial frameworks\, marginalizing Black history\, voices and experiences. Th is keynote will examine how my architectural practice uses architecture as a tool of empowerment\, exploring the rich intersections of Black identit y and the built environment. 聽\n \n Through personal narratives and referenc e projects\, I will explore themes of rootedness\, migration\, and communi ty\, reflecting on how Black spaces embody joy\, resilience\, and solidari ty. From reappropriating historically colonial spaces to designing for col lective futures\, the discussion will weave together stories of Montreal's Black history\, our current projects\, and broader reflections on Afrocen tric and diasporic considerations in the design of spaces. 聽\n \n The keynot e will explore the potential of architecture to transform physical space a s well as acting as a communal process. I will present our approaches to c arving out Black spaces in environments historically designed to exclude.
