 \n\nWith the burden of resource depletion and increasing pollution already
  causing climate change\, the need for sustainable approaches to every asp
 ect of life has increased the attractiveness of biological environmental m
 onitoring (biosensing). Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) such as microbia
 l fuel cell (MFC) and microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) are now being expl
 ored for biosensing as they have the potential of achieving the desired su
 stainable operation. This thesis contributes to improving the use of BES-b
 ased sensors for environmental monitoring and also focuses on solving some
  of the current challenges that may prevent their practical and sustainabl
