Our seminars are open to all and may be of i nterest to the general FAES community. Seminars take place on Thursdays at 11h30 in R3-045 (see dates below and attached schedule). A pizza lunch an d informal conversation with the speaker will be open to students immediat ely following the seminar.\n\nOur first NRS invited seminar for October is Dr. Aerin Jacob from the Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative.\n \nAlthough protected areas are the cornerstone of nature conservation\, al one they cannot sustain healthy populations of animals that need huge area s to move – species like grizzly bears\, wolves\, caribou\, and wolverines . The added pressures of climate change and habitat fragmentation make it clear that a shift to “large landscape conservation” is needed. This appro ach includes protecting core habitat areas\, linking them via critical cor ridors\, and considering the social\, cultural\, and economic factors that enable both people and nature thrive. The Yellowstone to Yukon (Y2Y) visi on is one of the first and best known large landscape\, collaborative cons ervation projects in the world. Stretching more than 3200 km across wester n North America\, Y2Y’s success is based on a combination of rigorous scie nce\, natural resource management\, and community and policy engagement ac ross multiple jurisdictions and working with more than 450 partner groups. This talk will offer lessons of how researchers\, decision-makers\, the p rivate and non-profit sectors\, and communities\, have worked together to achieve conservation at very broad scales.\n\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\n\nDr. Aer in Jacob has studied animal behaviour\, forest and coastal ecology\, and c onservation biology across British Columbia\, Alaska\, East Africa and Cen tral America. Aerin designs\, conducts\, and communicates applied research to inform Y2Y and partners across the region. This involves working with natural and social scientists at universities\, research institutions\, an d government agencies\, and collaborating with community partners. Aerin i s active in science outreach\, including public lectures\, storytelling\, policy engagement\, and supporting diversity in science. When she isn't th inking or talking about science\, she can be found skiing\, paddling\, and looking under rocks.\n\nFALL SCHEDULE\n\nOctober 10: Aerin Jacob ― Yellow stone to Yukon (Y2Y)From Yellowstone to Yukon: Science\, policy\, and acti on to protect and connect large landscapes\n\nOctober 24: Carly Ziter ― Co ncordia UniversityThinking beyond the park: landscape structure\, land-use history\, and biodiversity shape urban ecosystem services\n\nDecember 12: Jesse Shapiro ― UQAM: Quebec Center for Biodiversity SciencePredicting an d understanding toxic cyanobacterial blooms with genomics\n\nAll are welco me.
