School of Information Studies Professors Awarded $5.6M Grant to Propel Canada to the Forefront of Cybersecurity Data Analytics Research

Professor Benjamin Fung, Canada Research Chair in Data Mining for Cybersecurity, and Professor Steven Ding, both of the School of Information Studies in the Faculty of Arts, are part of a team that has recently been awarded a $5.6 million grant, funded under the NSERC Alliance Grants-CSE. The project, the only one to receive funding from NSERC Alliance Grants-CSE, will provide a multimodal, comprehensive solution for exploratory analysis of unstructured data, with a strong focus on cybersecurity applications.

Geography Department celebrates 80th anniversary

��ϲ��’s Department of Geography turns 80 this year!

This milestone marks the anniversary of George Kimble’s appointment as ��ϲ��’s first Professor of Geography and Department Chair on January 1, 1945.

Kimble, who had previously been a meteorologist with the Royal Navy, was allocated two rooms in the Arts Building (rooms 30 and 38) by the Faculty of Arts and Science to lay the foundation for the new department. A few months later, F.K. Hare was appointed as ��ϲ��’s second Professor of Geography (eventually becoming Dean of Arts and Science in 1961).

2025 Faculty of Science Excellence Award winners announced

Danielle Vlaho (Academic Associate), Joe Iantomasi (Clerical), Luisa Sabaz (Management), and Badawy Sha’ath (Technical) have been named recipients of the Faculty of Science Excellence Awards.

These awards, announced at the Faculty of Science Council meeting on May 20th, recognize the outstanding contributions made by members of the Faculty’s administrative and support staff during the 2024-2025 academic year.

��ϲ��'s Department of Psychology ranks 21st in the Times Higher Education Top 50 list

��ϲ�� provides a top-tier education in a wide variety of fields, as highlighted in the World University Rankings by Subject 2025, released on January 22 by Times Higher Education (THE).

��ϲ�� ranks among the top 90 in the world in all of the 11 subjects assessed, placing six subjects in the top 50. The number of institutions of higher education considered varied by discipline, from 389 for Law to 1,488 for Engineering.

��ϲ��’s Office for Science and Society receives 2024 James Randi Educational Foundation Award

��ϲ��’s Office for Science and Society (OSS) has been awarded the 2024 James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) Award. This award, totaling US$200,000, is given annually to people or organizations that encourage critical thinking and provide unbiased, fact-based answers to questions.
