Although many factors could explain these differences\, we focus on the spatial scale of the in itial conditions: is it more important to have accurate state variables at the small scales or at the large scales? To obtain some insight into this question\, the case of a squall line event is studied in numerical experi ments by removing successively more and more of the small scales in the in itial conditions. Here\, rather than filtering one by one each field of th e state variable\, such as the temperature and the wind fields\, the poten tial vorticity (PV) field is filtered and the piecewise PV inversion techn ique (Davis and Emanuel\, 1991) is used to obtain the initial state variab le fields. The filtered initial conditions are then used to simulate the s quall line event using the Weather and Research Forecasting model (WRF). I n this seminar\, we will outline our methodology and present comparison of the simulated rain rates with those from the radar observations.\n\nWedne sday Jan 29/ 2.30 PM/ Room 934 Burnside Hall\n\n \n DTSTART:20200129T193000Z DTEND:20200129T203000Z LOCATION:Room 934\, Burnside Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0B9\, 805 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Effects of the spatial scales in the initial conditions of numerica l weather forecasts URL:/meteo/channels/event/effects-spatial-scales-initi al-conditions-numerical-weather-forecasts-316775 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
