A great start to my day, if you ask me.

This morning, my refusal of the milk she added to her coffee sparked a conversation that drifted into old wives’ tales. She mentioned that adding milk to coffee could make the caffeine effect last longer and reduce the inevitable crash.
Fri, 23 May 2025 15:08:30 +0000 Eva Kellner B.A.Sc. 11102 at /oss The Best Diet for You? Little was it suspected at that time that this class of drugs would go on to become a global success not only for Type 2 diabetes but, now, also for people living with overweight/obesity. Since that time, numerous variants of GLP-1 have been developed, with at least 7 different forms in trials or available today.
Fri, 15 Dec 2023 20:17:14 +0000 Patricia Brubaker, Ph.D., F.R.S.C. 9763 at /oss Debunking Detox: Your Colon Doesn’t Need Cleaning! /oss/article/medical-critical-thinking-you-asked/debunking-detox-your-colon-doesnt-need-cleaning
This article was first published in The Skeptical Inquirer.
Fri, 01 Sep 2023 18:40:28 +0000 Ada McVean M.Sci 9617 at /oss Is Tightening the Belt Around the Corner for People Struggling with Weight? But no, these are the names of two new drugs that may force the current golden boy of the weight control world, Ozempic, onto the back burner. Given the widespread incidence of obesity and its serious health consequences, it is easy to understand why scientists have a large appetite for drugs that control appetite and why they get excited when studies emerge with impressive results. And that is exactly the case for orforglipron and retatrutide.
Thu, 29 Jun 2023 16:00:19 +0000 Joe Schwarcz PhD 9558 at /oss Berberine. Don’t swallow the hype. Maybe it has to do with some youthful memories of an upset tummy being soothed with a grated apple sprinkled with lemon juice. Or perhaps biting into one rekindles thoughts of the great times we had with my kids going apple picking. Then there is the notion that apple a day is supposed to keep the doctor away. That is in spite of the toxins it contains! No, I’m not talking about traces of pesticide residues, I’m speaking of natural toxins. I’ve seen innumerable baking soda volcanoes, vitamin C analyses and models of the solar system. Usually, the judges’ task is over once the winners are announced, but on one memorable occasion, the event was followed by an assembly where a game of “Challenge the Judge” was played. Students were asked to name a single object that the judges were then to incorporate into a scientifically meaningful sentence. A student panel would then determine a winner based on the ingenuity of the response.
Fri, 23 Apr 2021 21:50:28 +0000 Joe Schwarcz PhD 8714 at /oss Will intermittent fasting melt pandemic pounds? /oss/article/covid-19-health-nutrition/will-intermittent-fasting-melt-pandemic-pounds

This article was first published in The Montreal Gazette.
Wed, 28 Oct 2020 15:52:12 +0000 Christopher Labos MD, MSc 8462 at /oss The Right Chemistry: Intermittent Fasting /oss/article/health-videos/right-chemistry-intermittent-fasting

Mon, 03 Feb 2020 17:33:28 +0000 Joe Schwarcz PhD 8101 at /oss Cancer and Weight Loss /oss/article/health/cancer-and-weight-loss
The cause of the weight loss is complex. Complex metabolic changes occur when patients suffer from cachexia and to some extent they are irreversible.
