 Translational Medicine:  from target discovery and validation\, to experim
 ental therapeutics'\n\nPharmaceutical industry has shifted their model fro
 m drug and target discovery to clinical development.  To maintain a pipeli
 ne\, they rely on biotechnology and on academic researchers.  This has cre
 ated an opportunity to engage in creative research with a translational co
 mponent that can benefit academia\, industry\, patients\, and society at l
 arge.  However\, academics must approach target discovery\, drug discovery
 \, and translational medicine in ways that differ significantly from appro
 aches used by industry.\n	I will present our experience in applying concept
 s pertinent to academic research that have lead to discovery and validatio
 n of novel targets etiological to disease states\, and the subsequent deve
 lopment of novel compounds acting as agonists or as antagonists of the nov
 el targets\n	Depending on time\, I will show specific examples of our work 
 on\n	*  receptor tyrosine kinases -TrkA\, TrkB\, TrkC- applied to neurodege
 nerative diseases\n	*  receptors with pro-apoptotic function -p75NTR- appli
 ed to neurodegenerative diseases and vascular diseases.\n	*  cancer vaccine
 s\n	The good news is that it is possible to engage in translational researc
 h. However\, this is not an easy endeavor\, and significant challenges exi
 st. Overcoming the obstacles require a strong collaborative environment an
 d high quality hypothesis-driven science.\n\n \n
