Seeking a more efficient means of deriving geometrical propositions for the purpose of astronomical calculation\, Viète created an algebra i n which the knowns and unknowns are not numbers but are the relative sizes of non-quantified geometric magnitudes. The nature of his algebraic terms are necessarily structured differently than the terms of the numerical al gebra which had been practiced since antiquity\, and that difference exten ds to their notational representations. In this talk I will describe that numerical algebra\, contrast it with Viète’s geometrical algebra\, and ex plain how Viète’s algebra was soon adapted again to a numerical context. \n\nThe Montreal Inter-University Workshop on the History and Philosophy o f Mathematics' website.\n\n \n DTSTART:20241129T203000Z DTEND:20241129T220000Z LOCATION:Room 927\, Leacock Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 2T7\, 855 r ue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Jeff Oaks (University of Indianapolis)\, 'François Viète's Revoluti on in Algebra' URL:/philosophy/channels/event/jeff-oaks-university-in dianapolis-francois-vietes-revolution-algebra-360974 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
