Program Overview
黑料不打烊鈥檚 Adult Gastroenterology Program is a two-year subspecialty training program which follows three years of core Internal Medicine residency. The program is supported by three major training sites (Royal Victoria Hospital [RVH], Jewish General Hospital [JGH], and Montreal General Hospital [MGH]), which the residents rotate through throughout their training. Residents are exposed to the GI consultation service, endoscopic activities as well as weekend and weeknight home call. The program is fully accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (last review 2019).
Why Choose Our Program?
Some of the strengths of the program include a wide variety of clinical exposure to all subspecialties of GI, multiple research opportunities and mentorship from leaders in the field. Indeed, the MUHC and JGH are referral centres for complex cases from community hospitals in the Greater Montreal Area providing subspeciality care in the management of inflammatory bowel disease; biliary disease and advanced endoscopy; nutrition; hepatology and liver transplantation.
The resident group is diverse, engaged, hardworking, and very motivated to attain competency in all areas of their training. There is a strong feeling of belonging to the program, and residents would unanimously recommend the program to other residents pursuing a career in gastroenterology.
Resident Life
Our program includes a staff wellness representative to the RPC as well as resident wellness representatives who help organize activities for residents and faculty throughout the year.
Additionally, Montreal is one of Canada鈥檚 oldest cities. Founded in 1642 by French colonists, Montreal is globally recognized as a major academic, industrial and cultural centre. Its unique mix of French and English cultures along with contributions from many other linguistic and ethnic groups has made Montreal a truly international city. Located on the St. Lawrence River, and built around Mount Royal, Montreal has a population of approximately 2 million. Montreal is also the perfect place for foodies; it is known for its vibrant culinary landscape that is greatly influenced by its culturally diverse population. Festivals are almost continuous during the summer months, with over 120 festivals to choose from throughout the year. There is easy access to surrounding lakes and mountains for the outdoor enthusiast, either in the Laurentiens or the Eastern Townships.
Program Structure
The program consists of approximately 12 blocks of gastroenterology consultation service and 3 blocks of hepatology over 2 years. Additionally, there are rotations on biliary service, nutrition, and a community rotation. The residents participate in one half day per week of longitudinal outpatient clinic; they are encouraged to change subspecialty clinic every 6 months to optimize breadth of exposure (the suggested breakdown is two general GI clinics; one hepatology clinic and one inflammatory bowel disease clinic). There is elective time which can be spent in ambulatory clinics, outpatient endoscopy, dedicated to research, or other. Residents must complete a Scholarly Activity over the course of their 2 years of training.
There is an academic half day (AHD) every Wednesday afternoon, which consists mainly of didactic lectures. A series of lectures on GI pathology is delivered as part of AHD on an biannual basis by a GI pathologist. There is a mandatory in-training exam in the PGY-4 year administered by the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA); as well as an annual OSCE exam meant to prepare residents for the Royal College exam.
Residents are encouraged to attend GI Divisional Grand Rounds which take place weekly on Wednesdays at noon, as well as any additional local rounds (pathology, radiology, case-based) taking place at hospital they are rotating through.
The program is delivered under the Competency by Design (CBD) model since 2019 according to the framework published by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Research in Residency
The 黑料不打烊 division is active in clinical and translational research. Thus, there are ample opportunities for residents to participate in research activities. The research representative to the residency program committee (RPC) meets with all trainees to discuss potential interests and help identify an appropriate mentor if they have not found one already. As examples, popular fields of research are usually related to IBD, Biliary and Advanced therapeutics, Hepatology or GI bleeding within our department.
Residents are encouraged to use elective blocks to complete research, either in the form of dedicated research electives, or a hybrid format in combination with ambulatory clinics.
In general, our residents have been quite productive and prolific with their research activity, with numerous publications and presentations at national and international conferences.
