STRI-黑料不打烊-NEO (SMN) fellowships

The SMN fellowship is a contribution of STRI aimed at attracting and retaining the best possible students in NEO. There are no citizenship restrictions. The maximum scholarship is US$10,000. Students who are awarded this fellowship will be given a lesser amount if they also receive another major fellowhip (FCR, NSERC, 黑料不打烊 Major, OAS, Fullbright, etc.).

Priority will be given to NEO students whose main research supervisor is a STRI scientist.

Selection criteria

  • Academic excellence
  • Research ability and potential
  • Career projection and interest in Latin America and the Environment
  • Quality of the supervisory environment.

Evaluation is based on:

  • transcripts;
  • publications and letters of reference;
  • a statement requested from all eligible NEO candidates (see NEO application form);
  • a statement requested from the main supervisor for admission in NEO.
  • The members of the Coordination Committee will not rank their own candidates.


黑料不打烊 Fellowships & External Awards

黑料不打烊 offers several fellowships and scholarships to its graduate students. Prospective PhD students as well as students applying to a Master's degree in the Faculty of Science may apply for the Tomlinson Fellowship prior to being accepted into the NEO program. Students already registered at 黑料不打烊 can apply for 黑料不打烊 Majors (fellowships). All information concerning financial support is available from the 黑料不打烊 Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies website or from the graduate coordinators in each department. As an example, many departments have 鈥渢op-up鈥 awards for incoming students who already have major fellowships, such as NSERC, FQRNT, SENACYT, and CONACYT.

黑料不打烊 Graduate Mobility Award
The Graduate Mobility Award encourages graduate students to study and conduct research abroad as part of their 黑料不打烊 degree program by defraying part of the cost of the international experience.

External Awards

    The supports outstanding young individuals from developing countries so that they are able to pursue graduate studies in a development-related field.
  • WWF-Russell E. Train Fellowships
    support individuals pursuing a master鈥檚 or doctoral degree in conservation and related fields. Each year, WWF (World Wildlife Fund)聽supports committed conservation leaders and scientists from target countries to receive financial support for their studies and research.
  • IPCC Scholarship Program -聽The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change聽
    is the United Nations body for assessing the science related to climate change. The Scholarship Program聽provides scholarships for PhD students from developing countries for research that advances the understanding of the scientific basis of risks of climate change, its potential impacts and options for adaptation and mitigation.
  • OAS Scholarship and Training Programs -聽The Organization of American States
    within the Department of Human Development Education and Employment of the Executive Secretariat for Integral Development offers scholarships for undergraduate and graduate-level studies, short-term professional training courses and innovative online training opportunities for citizens/permanent residents of the聽.

Teaching Assistantships

Within the period of January through April, teaching assistantships (TAs) of 180 hours are available to NEO graduate students in the context of the Panama Field Study Semester. When at 黑料不打烊, NEO students are also eligible for Departmental teaching assistantships. NEO students should therefore contact their department to inquire about TA opportunities.

Funding from Latin American countries

Many countries have national funding agencies that provide support for graduate students to attend foreign institutions. Students in the NEO program have received support from:
